History

At social gatherings, these huge, single saucer shaped blooms helped ladies of the 1900’s discover the location of the ‘water closet’ without having to ask the hostess.

Habit

Grown as an annual in the northeast, these sun loving flowers tower over 6 feet when in full bloom in mid-summer. Will require staking if exposed to strong winds.

Culture

Sow seeds any time of year when the ground can be cultivated to produce flowers the second year. For flowers the first year, start seeds indoors in peat pots 8 weeks before last frost date. Just press seeds into the soil, do not cover. Seeds require light to germinate. Plant outside after last frost is passed. Cut stalks back after flowering and mulch over crowns in winter.
