The Borlotto bean, also known as ‘Borlotti’, ‘Cranberry Bean’ or ‘Fire Tongue’, is an Italian Heirloom bush-type variety. It is a vigorous grower and heavy producer. Can be used as a fresh shell bean or left on the plant as a dry bean. Popular in Italy and portugal, it’s delicious in casseroles, hearty stews and bean salads, or use as fresh cooked beans.

SOWING…Plant seed outdoors in late spring after the ground has warmed to 65-75 degrees F and there is no danger of frost. Plant seeds ½ inch deep, 4 inches apart, in rows 18 inches apart. Cover seeds with fine soil, well pressed down, and water well. Beans love sun and plenty of water.

THINNING…When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin to 6 inches apart.

GERMINATION…Germinates in 6 to 14 days depending on soil and temperature conditions.

REMARKS…For highest quality and yield, pick pods when young, about 4 to 5 inches long. For continuous crop, make successive plantings every 2 to 3 weeks until late summer.
