Perennials for Dry Soil in Sun With
the increasing occurrence of water shortage in many regions, perennials
that will tolerate dry, sunny
conditions are at a premium. Fortunately,
a number of plants can survive without rain or watering for long periods.
Many of these have long taproots, but densely hairy or waxy leaf-surfaces
also help to reduce water loss.
Perennials for Dry Soil in Shade Dry,
shady sites are one of the most difficult garden situations to deal
with successfully. One
easy solution is to plant these areas with the perennials listed here. Avoid planting in the
soil under shallow-rooted trees, like maples; simply mulch these sites instead.
Under deep-rooted trees, such as oaks, dig “planting pockets”
between the roots.
