Low to Medium Perennials for Heavy Clay Soil Heavy
clay soils are often wet and sticky in winter, but hard and lumpy in
dry summers. When amended
with organic matter and mulched, they can also by very fertile and amenable
for a wide range of perennials.
None of the following will grow much above 36in (90cm) and are
suited to small gardens or the front of larger borders and beds.
Many
of the more robust perennials are tolerant of heavy clay soils.
Some have densely fibrous rootstocks, others are deep-rooted,
allowing them to survive as long as their site is not waterlogged.
The following perennials, all 3-6ft (1-2m) tall, will do even
better if drainage can be improved by adding organic matter, like compost,
to the soil.
